2. Aquafresh Between Teeth provides superior subgingival access and gingival margin cleaning* [Murad et al, 2008b]

Aim

• Gingival margin cleaning and subgingival access efficacy of Aquafresh Between Teeth was compared with that of two other commercially available toothbrush products.*

Method

• Six toothbrushes from each product group (Aquafresh Between Teeth, leading cross-bristle toothbrush, ordinary flat-trim toothbrush) were tested four times for a total of 24 tests on each toothbrush design.
• For cleaning at the gingival margin, the tooth brushing technique involved independent evaluations of each toothbrush in a horizontal brushing motion.
• – Tooth shapes simulated posterior teeth and a brushing weight of 500 g was used (brushing technique: 60 seconds at two strokes/second with a 15 mm stroke).
• – The length of artificial plaque deposit removed was recorded at the junction of the simulated gingivae and pressure sensitive paper.
• For subgingival access, each toothbrush to be tested was aligned with the papillae at the gingival margin (brushing technique: 30 seconds at two strokes/second with a 15 mm stroke length).
• – The maximum depth of the plaque deposit removed was recorded on an artificial-plaque covered substrate placed under the simulated gingivae and around the posterior shaped teeth, with readings measured in mm.

Results

• Gingival margin cleaning efficacy was significantly higher (p<0.001) for Aquafresh Between Teeth than for the commercially available toothbrushes* (Figure 2).
• Subgingival access was significantly higher (p<0.001) for Aquafresh Between Teeth than for the commercially available toothbrushes (Figure 3).

Conclusion

• Aquafresh Between Teeth:
  • – provides improved gingival margin cleaning and subgingival access efficacy.*

* Studies compared Aquafresh Between Teeth with ordinary flat-trim and leading
cross-bristle toothbrushes.
