IADR/CED Symposium: Addressing Oral Malodour
Thessaloniki in Greece played host to the International Association for Dental Research Continental European Division (CED) & Israeli Division (ID) Congress in September 2007.
Professor John Clarkson, Dean of Trinity College Dublin Dental School & past IADR President introduced the Aquafresh iso-active® symposium, by highlighting quality of life issues for oral malodour sufferers. Several presentations followed:
Professor Francis Hughes of the University of Barts and The London, Queen Mary's School of Medicine, opened the symposium with a review of oral malodour and stated that surveys show it is as common as periodontal disease but often neglected by dental professionals.
Dr Rob Allaker, University of Barts and The London, Queen Mary's School of Medicine, presented the first ever microbial mapping of the tongue surface, and concluded that the most odour-causing bacteria are found beyond the reach of normal oral hygiene procedures.
Dr Rod McNab, (GSK) presented evidence that regular tongue cleaning is necessary to reduce the microbial colonisation of the tongue and to reduce malodour overnight.
Dr Gary Burnett (GSK) discussed the role of metal ions to neutralise oral malodour.
Gail Martin, (GSK) presented a novel biological model to establish clinical relevance of in-vitro data for oral malodour studies - a major step forward in evaluating different therapies.
Evelyn Newby (GSK) presented the results of a study comparing Aquafresh iso-active® to a commercially available triclosan-containing dentifrice in reducing oral malodour and the advantage of Aquafresh iso-active®.
Dr Mary Lynn Bosma (GSK) presented the results of a clinical study that demonstrated Aquafresh iso-active®'s enhanced foam production and removal of more bacteria and oral debris than commercially available triclosan-containing dentifrice.
Dr Alexis Roberts-McIntosh (GSK) presented the novel technology behind the new gel to foam dentifrice, Aquafresh iso-active® and reviewed features and benefits.
